INDEPENDENCE DAY

Waiting at the courthouse on the 4th of July
The judge stared at the clock with his blind eye
I searched my empty pockets for the missing wedding band
That’s when I heard the lonesome whistle whine

Stop that train, departing with my bride
Stop that train, my baby’s stowed inside
If that engine starts to roam
She ain’t never coming home
Don’t let this be my independence day

Went down to the station, looking for a fight
The porter said he’d seen the girl in white
He pointed to a locomotive 19 coaches long
That’s when those steel wheels started to take flight

Ran along the platform, calling out her name
I searched in every window for my dame
At last I found her as the engine picked up steam
That’s when the brakeman saved me from my shame

Reached up for the railing, hopped up on the stairs
I marched right down the aisle and found her chair
She held me in her arms, and I gave her all I had
That’s when the bombs started bursting in the air
